Recruiting Leaders

Nebraska EMS Educator Symposium

9-27-08

Goal:  This is a 90-minute discussion with Nebraska’s EMS education leaders as they look at the current and future needs in the profession, how to get out of the current “rut” of doing things the same way, and develop a pathway for the future by recruiting leaders and replacing ourselves.

Objectives:  Upon completion of this discussion, each participant will be able to:

1)           access, review and discuss the Institute of Medicine and National Highway             Traffic Safety Administration’s reports on EMS and its potential impact on             Nebraska EMS;

2)           review the proposed Scope of Practice initiative and discuss the impact on               Nebraska EMS;

3)           Discuss current trends in EMS education:  who teaches, what do they teach, who    has medical oversight, what quality improvement programs are used?;

4)           Plan for change:  who should teach, what should they teach, guaranteed medical     oversight, and full-circle, closed-loop quality improvement program;

5)           Discuss:  Who will replace us?  How do we recruit our future leaders?  How do       we successfully mentor our stars?
