Teaching with Case Studies
Nebraska EMS Educator Symposium
9-27-08
Goal: This 90-minute program uses case studies to demonstrate the steps in developing, facilitating and presenting case studies to meet objectives within a healthcare curriculum.
Objectives: Upon completion of this program, each participant will be able to:
1) Develop a template for scenarios and apply that for lecture-style/facilitated classroom discussion;
2) Define war stories vs. case studies;
3) Define and discuss simple vignettes for few objectives vs. prolonged scenarios that meet multiple objectives;
4) Discuss how to facilitate discussion and adapt results based on student interaction;
5) Describe staging of scenarios – develop then write objectives or write objectives then scenarios?
6) Describe facilitation of case studies in small vs. large groups;
7) Discuss methods to share developed case studies: Can other instructors use your material and get the same responses, meet the same objectives?
